There’s a lovely woman on TikTok that I follow for her delicious recipes. I believe she’s genuinely sweet, kind, and caring. To this point, her videos have been exclusively food-related. They are well done, easy to follow, and short enough to keep my attention. I enjoy her content and was always happy to see her pop up on my FYP.

Then, she decided to use her platform to send a message to those she believes are intolerant. It was a quick, 20-second “lesson” using eggs. She first pointed out that all of the farm-fresh eggs in front of her were different colors on the outside. Then she broke some of them open and said, “But they’re all the same on the inside,” bent down, smiled into the camera, and ended with, “I hope that helps."

It didn’t.

Of course, the keyboard warriors jumped into the comment section to applaud her for her clever put-down of all the hateful bigots out there.

“Louder for the people in the back, please!”
“Very well said, but it’s wasted on the ignorant.”
“The people who need to hear this never will.”
“Yes! Thank you for being a good person!”

I.
am.
so.
tired.

Because immigration is the red-hot, inescapable, non-stop topic in the news today, and there is a pervasive narrative that many Americans fear people who don’t look like them, I can only assume that’s what she was referencing.

I like this woman. I believe she’s probably very smart. And she has every right to post any content she pleases on her own page. But this particular “lesson” came across as condescending and supercilious. And yes - I asked for help finding that word, but it fit perfectly; “displaying a haughty, disdainful attitude, considering yourself superior.”

She is right that we are all the same, in that each of us was created by and is infinitely loved by the God of the Universe. That is where the similarities begin, and it is precisely where they end. We are one race - the human race. From there, we divide into untold numbers of beautiful, diverse tribes, tongues, and nations that span the globe - all with different skin tones, languages, values, and beliefs.

And to protect those tribes, values, and beliefs that each diverse community of the human race holds dear, every civilized nation in the world has borders - and enforces them. For example:

  • If you break immigration laws in Mexico, you will face up to 10 years in prison - regardless of the color of your skin.
  • If you resist detention efforts at the border in China, weapons will be used against you -regardless of the color of your skin.
  • If you cross the border illegally in Africa, you will be arrested and deported - regardless of the color of your skin.

And all of the governing bodies in these countries also actively monitor, detain, and deport individuals who choose not to comply with legal, migration, or stay requirements - regardless of the color of their skin.

Apparently, this is OK everywhere else in the world - just not here.

And yes, there are many more arguments to make regarding the myriad of complexities surrounding illegal immigration, how it’s being handled, etc. But because this woman chose to focus only on skin color, that is all I’m addressing here.

The second I finished watching her egg lesson (after the face-palm and dramatic eye roll), I hit the “unfollow” button. The constant loop of virtue signaling, pious platitudes, and a lack of common sense that pervades every aspect of our world now has simply worn me down. And, fair or not, this kind lady lost a follower just from my sheer exhaustion.

But then I went back and followed her again - because I want to be better than that.

And I really want those easy, delicious TikTok recipes.

I really am only here for the food.
